The American Trucking Associations reported a 1.1% decline in their For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index for September, following a marginal increase in August. This decrease offsets half of the gains achieved in the months following April's low point. Despite signs of stabilizing, the freight market experienced the largest year-over-year drop since November 2020, signaling ongoing volatility. September's year-over-year tonnage fell by 4.1%, marking the seventh consecutive decrease and the steepest in that time. The actual tonnage hauled before seasonal adjustments also dropped by 6.8% from August. Trucking, a key indicator of the U.S. economy's health, carried 72.6% of the country's freight tonnage and earned over 80% of transportation revenues in 2022.
